In a dynamic step forward for STEM education in the Great Lakes Bay Region, Kettering University and the Lockwood STEM Center have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), forging a powerful partnership that aims to enhance learning, expand access, and build future-focused pathways for students across Mid-Michigan.

“This partnership represents a significant step forward in providing our students with access to exceptional STEM education and career opportunities,” said Dr. Don Killingbeck, Hemlock Public School District Superintendent. “Kettering University's renowned programs and our students' passion for innovation create a powerful combination that will benefit both institutions and, most importantly, the future of our students.”

This five-year agreement formalizes collaboration between the two institutions, offering unique academic and career opportunities to students from Lockwood-affiliated school districts including Hemlock, Merrill, Swan Valley, St. Charles, and Freeland.

Highlights of the Partnership Include:

  • Kettering University Scholarship

An annual $25,000 renewable scholarship will be available for eligible first-year students from Lockwood-connected schools. Students must meet criteria related to academic performance, conduct, and enrollment. Kettering will provide an annual list of applicants, and Lockwood will verify participation in its programs.

  • STEM Learning and Outreach

The institutions will co-host interactive panels, group visits to Kettering's campus, and other outreach activities to elevate STEM visibility and excitement.

  • Educational Access and Equity

Lockwood STEM Center will promote Kettering’s pre-college and recruitment programs and work with students to ensure all have access to opportunities that support their educational and career goals.

  • Future-Focused Innovation

The MOU includes a shared commitment to explore new programs and initiatives, ensuring the partnership remains responsive and forward-thinking.

Matt Wesener, President of the Hemlock Board of Education, echoed Dr. Killingbeck’s sentiment. “The Board of Education is committed to fostering collaborations that empower our students to achieve their full potential. This MOU with Kettering University aligns perfectly with that vision, creating pathways for academic advancement and workforce readiness in high-demand fields. We are excited about the possibilities this partnership unlocks.”

“This collaboration is about more than just scholarships,” added Dana Lockwood, Student Champion and STEM Advocate. “It's about igniting a passion for STEM, connecting students with mentors and role models, and creating a community where innovation thrives. We believe this MOU will inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers.”
