On May 2nd, a small group of 6th and 8th grade girls traveled to Delta College to spend the day exploring STEM careers that are traditionally male-dominated fields. The girls visited a variety of sessions that had them doing hands-on projects. These sessions were presented by members of the American Chemical Society, of the Mid-Michigan Society of Women Engineers, as well as professors from Delta College.
“This event is such a great opportunity for our female students. Most of the presenters are women that work in STEM related careers,” says Ashley Bebow, a 6th and 7th grade mathematics teacher at HMS. “This was our third year of attending Delta College’s Girls’ Day Out, and I am really happy that I was able to help facilitate this event again for our students.”
During this year’s event, our students were able to program robots, create their own nail polish, find out what it takes to be a firefighter, learn how surface tension works, build towers and discover the world of engineering, explore the connections between science and psychology, and see how a computer is built from scratch! Our girls had a fun time and did a great job of representing our school during this trip!
