Hemlock Public School District proudly announces Angela Pohl's appointment as a Dean of Students (one of three) and District Director of Athletics. Mrs. Pohl comes to Hemlock Public School District after a twenty-three-year career at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) where she has most recently served as the Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. Pohl brings a wealth of athletic administrative experience and leadership to her new role.
Dean Pohl has dedicated over two decades to SVSU, serving in various capacities, including Interim Director of Athletics from August 2022 - October 2023. During her tenure, she has ensured operational and financial stability, has been recognized for her strategic leadership, community engagement initiatives and a commitment to gender equity in athletics. Pohl also has invaluable experience in event management, academic advising, NCAA rules compliance, as well as policy development. Her extensive involvement with NCAA national committees, particularly Division II sport specific (baseball and men’s soccer) and the Championships Committee, underscores her reputation and deep commitment to the athletics industry.
The board president, Matt Wesener, remarked, "Angela's remarkable track record at SVSU and her active participation in NCAA governance make her an exceptional choice for this role. We are excited to see her bring that same passion and expertise to the Hemlock Public School District."
Pohl expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, "It is an honor to have been selected to serve the Huskie Pack as a dean of students and district athletic director. I want to thank all the members of the interview committee, specifically Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck, as well as principals Cory Snider and Keith Green, for a warm and enthusiastic welcome. I am committed to fostering an environment where our student-athletes can excel in sports, academics, and everyday life. I can’t wait to get started and pull the sled!".
Angela Pohl's passion to facilitate a comprehensive and balanced experience for students and student-athletes is evidenced by her own experience. Pohl earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in psychology and sociology at Clemson University where she also went on to earn a Master of Education in guidance and counseling services. She began her career in athletics administration as a graduate assistant in the student-athlete enrichment center at Clemson and then went on to serve as an academic advisor for the football program at Kansas State University before arriving at SVSU in August 2001.
Pohl was a member of the inaugural women’s soccer team at Clemson University and recognized as “Female Athlete of the Year” in 1998. Her on-field contributions helped the Tigers reach the NCAA post-season tournament in each year of her four-year student-athlete experience, including an appearance in the Elite 8 and final ranking of #10 in the nation in 1997. In 1998, in recognition of her on and off-the-field contributions, accolades, and achievements while at Clemson, Pohl received the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship.
Angela Pohl's appointment is effective August 1, 2024, as she transitions from her role at SVSU. The school district eagerly anticipates her leadership in promoting excellence and integrity within the athletic programs and the overall student body.
Superintendent Don Killingbeck added, "Angela’s vision aligns well with our district's goals. Her leadership qualities and proven ability to enhance student and athlete experiences ensure that she will make significant contributions to our community."
