Middle school parents--you should be very proud of your kids today. As I met with them today by grade, they could have been grumbling, complaining, negative or simply delirious about having three weeks off. Instead, I talked to kids who were adaptable, who were ready to do whatever they could with this time off to extend their learning, who were positive and looking on the bright side, who were ready to accept this new challenge of complete virtual learning for a couple of weeks. We have great kids at Hemlock Middle School. And terrific teachers and staff as well. AND great parents who support their kids and our staff. Thank you for helping your kids and our teachers to meet this new educational challenge head on. We have much to be proud of. Give your child a pat on the back and a high five today.

Hello middle school parents! Just a note to let you know how we are proceeding in terms of schoolwork during the coming two weeks (since the governor has shut down schools during that time. We are out of school for the next 3 weeks--2 weeks mandated by the governor plus the already-scheduled Spring Break. At this time, we are scheduled to return to school on April 6. I am meeting today with each grade level and going over our plans and answering questions kids have. All of our core class teachers will be providing means for all students to continue learning during the next two weeks. All students should be either taking home their assigned Chromebook or have a plan to use another device at home to complete school work. Students who have paid the insurance fee should be all set with a charger. Student who have not previously paid the insurance fee will be bringing home their Chromebook and a charger from school--don't worry about the insurance. If you prefer that your child use a different device that is compatible with Google Classroom and StudySync, that is fine. There will be assignments and due dates communicated from teachers via emails and Google Classroom. We are working to include parents in accessing this work so you are aware of it as well--but you can always ask your child to see their Classroom account at any point. The work assigned will be accompanied by useful instruction components as necessary--video, audio, etc.--it will not simply be work to do. Further information will be provided as it becomes available. Some staff will be here at school each day if questions or needs arise. You can always reach us via email or phone during the next two weeks. We appreciate your flexibility with this and your support of our students' education--virtual learning is new for many of us and we will do our very best to make it a valuable experience for all concerned.

What can you do to help your student and the rest of your family stay as healthy as possible all day, every day? Use good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases. Stay home if you are sick and advise others to do the same. Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, if soap and warm water are not available. We clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces (computers, keyboards, desks, etc.) as often as possible; you can do the same at home and away. This is especially important when you are school and other public places. Your healthy choices help others to stay healthy as well!

Are you considering making Hemlock Middle School your educational destination next year? If so, please call 642-5253 to schedule a tour of the building and to get your enrollment questions answered. Tours are scheduled for 9 AM on Monday, March 9 and on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 PM. We have limited schools of choice openings for next year, so now is the time to join the Huskie Pack. If neither of these scheduled opportunities work for you, please call and schedule an appointment. We are excited to show you what we have to offer your child! While you're at it, check out our Hemlock Middle School Facebook page to see glimpses of what we have to offer.
