Our recycling program is off to a great start. We have sets of three containers as shown below distributed around the building for everyone to use. We also have two different poster contest winning displays in the building to remind kids to recycle.

What Can a Parent Do To Best Help Their Teen in School and in Life? Being a parent can be a tough job. Being a kid can be tough as well. So...what can a parent do to help their child on the road to solving their problems, accepting responsibility, and becoming an independent thinker and problem solver? How old is your child? School age kids: start practicing now! Let your kid do the talking as often as possible: ordering at restaurants, asking for directions, or calling a friend on the phone to ask for a playdate instead of arranging it yourself via text message. High school kids: while there is still room for parental involvement at this age, insist that your child attempt all communication on her own first. If she needs to miss a quiz and do a make-up, have her make the arrangements with the teacher, and only intervene AFTER she has made the first attempt on her own. If she has a conflict between track practice and music lessons, have her discuss the possibilities with the involved groups, then have her make the decision and deal with the potential consequences. Kids of all ages: TRUST your kid to do well, and tell her repeatedly that you believe that she can make good decisions on her own. Give her room to make mistakes, even major ones sometimes, and learn from them together. As parents, we will inevitably watch our kids struggle, feel uncomfortable and even fail. As painful as that can be, you aren’t doing your child any favors by trying to shield her from this part of life or solve her problems for her. Instead, give her opportunities to learn strength and self-confidence, so she can handle future challenges with grace.

Parents-please remember that State of Michigan law prohibits us from administering any medication, prescription or over the counter-without a completed medication form signed by a physician. We realize that this over the counter physician signature requirement is new, but we are obligated to follow the law. You received both forms in your Welcome Back to School folder, copied on opposite sides of the same sheet of paper. See the attached pictures of the form. We want to do everything we can to assist your child here with medications-please ensure these forms are complete so we can do so. Thanks!

PROCESS FOR STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICKUP AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL--We are putting in place some guidelines that we believe will make student drop off and pick up from cars easier for parents and safer for all concerned. Please follow these rules out of respect for everyone involved--kids and parents. Using the map below as your guide for traffic pattern: 1) Please ensure that your child is prepared to quickly exit your vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk--backpack in hand, seat belt undone, everything needed in their hands. The time to give last minute instructions is prior to entering the drop zone. 2) Pull your vehicle ahead as far as possible toward the west end of the parking lot before you stop and your child exits your vehicle. Do not stop in the east end of the loop or make multiple stops in the loop. When you have pulled ahead as far as possible, all students exit the vehicle quickly at the same time. 3) The drop off and pickup pattern is now marked by yellow arrows. Drive only in the areas indicated by the arrows painted on the parking lot and illustrated in the picture below. Do not cut across parking spaces. 4) As much as possible, keep the line moving so everyone can get thru as safely and quickly as possible. 5) If a child needs more time to remove projects, etc. then follow the arrows to park in a marked parking space to allow time to remove those items. Use caution when in the parking spaces and when leaving them--no one needs to leave the lot so quickly that it is worth it to damage a vehicle or injure a child in the process. 6) Instruct your child to always be aware of cars in their vicinity to ensure that they can move toward the building safely. 7) If your child walks or rides their bike to school, have them follow the sidewalk down Maple Street to where it ends, then skirt the parking lot by going west on the grass to the west end of the parking lot and then go north across the grass outside of the parking lot area to reach the sidewalk. At the end of the day, have them wait a few minutes for traffic to clear and then skirt the parking lot on the grass to reach the sidewalk. 8) If the process of student drop off and pick up is causing too big of a delay in your morning routine, consider leaving earlier (or later) to avoid the rush between 7:30-7:40 when most students tend to arrive. With your cooperation and consideration, the beginning and end of day traffic pattern can become safer, quicker and smoother for all concerned.
